Securing Bangladesh's Aquaculture Future: MTI Facilitates Brood Bank Study Tour to China & Thailand

The foundation of a thriving aquaculture sector is the availability of healthy, high-quality fish stock. To secure this for Bangladesh, the Department of Fisheries launched the ‘Brood Bank Establishment Project (3rd Phase)’. Supporting this vital initiative, MTI Ltd. successfully managed a high-level international study tour for 12 officials to China and Thailand, two global powerhouses in aquaculture.

Learning from China's Scientific Excellence

The program included a deep dive into the scientific advancements of China's aquaculture sector, in collaboration with the renowned Freshwater Fisheries Research Centre (FFRC) of the Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences (CAFS). Here, the delegation gained practical knowledge on the production and management of genetically improved brood fish, particularly for indigenous carps. The exposure to FFRC's cutting-edge research and methodologies provided a scientific blueprint for enhancing Bangladesh's own brood management practices.

A Holistic and Immersive Learning Experience

The seven-day program was designed as a comprehensive learning journey, combining expert-led classroom discussions with practical exposure visits to hatcheries, fisheries projects, and research centers in both China and Thailand. The collaboration with Thailand's Centre for Aquaculture Development (Aqua-Centre) offered insights into commercial-scale operations and best practices. This blended approach ensured that officials from the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock and other departments could translate theoretical knowledge into actionable strategies to increase fish production and ensure the supply of quality fingerlings back home.

Wuxi Museum, China — Beyond technical sessions, the tour included cultural visits, such as to the Wuxi Museum in China, to foster broader understanding and strengthen international ties.

By connecting Bangladesh's fisheries experts with leading international institutions, this MTI-managed study tour has made a significant contribution to the ‘Brood Bank Establishment Project’. The knowledge and practical skills gained will directly support the development of a more productive, sustainable, and genetically robust aquaculture sector in Bangladesh.
