High-Level Delegation Studies Social Safety Nets in Sri Lanka & Maldives

To strengthen and refine Bangladesh's extensive social safety net programs, the Department of Social Services implemented a high-level learning visit to Sri Lanka and the Maldives. Management and Training International (MTI) Ltd., in association with the Ceylon Institute of Management & Technology, was proud to manage this important exposure trip from October 9-17, 2018.

The significance of the visit was underscored by the composition of the 16-member delegation. It was headed by three Honourable Members of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Social Welfare: Mr. Md. Abdul Matin, MP; Mr. Pir Fazlur Rahman, MP; and Ms. Lutfa Taher, MP.

The Sri Lankan leg of the tour featured a prestigious visit to the Parliament of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka. Here, the delegates engaged in a productive meeting with the Honourable Deputy Speaker, Mr. Jayasundara Mudiayanselage Ananda Kumarasiri, sharing policy-level insights and experiences on social welfare governance.

Beyond high-level policy discussions, the delegation explored the practical implementation of social services. They visited the Kandy Social Services Training Centre to observe vocational training programs and held experience-sharing sessions in Baddegama/Galle and with the Department of Social Services, Western Province, to understand grassroots-level activities.

The tour concluded with a visit to the Bangladeshi Embassy in Male, Maldives, for diplomatic briefings. This comprehensive program provided the high-level delegation with a multifaceted understanding of regional social safety net models, offering valuable perspectives to inform policy and practice in Bangladesh.
