Promoting Safe Healthcare: MTI Completes 3-Batch Refresher Training on Rational Drug Use

Ensuring the therapeutically sound and cost-effective use of medicines is a critical component of a robust healthcare system. To strengthen this capability within urban health centers, MTI Ltd. successfully organized a comprehensive "Refresher Training on Rational Drug Use" for medical professionals of the Urban Primary Health Care Services Delivery Project-II (UPHCSDP-II). The program, spanning six months, was executed in three distinct batches to ensure maximum coverage and effectiveness.

Empowering 75 Medical Professionals Nationwide

The training program was specifically designed for **Doctors, Counselors, and Paramedics** working across 45 Partnership Areas (PAs) of the project. Held at the Mohammadpur Fertility Services and Training Centre (MFSTC) in Dhaka, the initiative successfully trained a total of **75 participants** (10 male and 65 female).

To facilitate focused learning and accommodate the schedules of healthcare providers, MTI structured the training into three separate batches conducted between June and December 2024:

1st Batch: Held from June 22–24, 2024.
2nd Batch: Held from June 25–27, 2024.
3rd Batch: Held from November 30 – December 02, 2024.

Curriculum: Combating Resistance and Improving Management

For all three batches, the core objective was to ensure that clinic pharmacies are managed appropriately by authorized personnel and to reduce morbidity through better medication practices. Expert resource persons delivered sessions on critical topics including:

Antibiotic Resistance: Understanding antibiotic usage in primary health care and the global perspective on resistance.
Inventory Management: Best practices for the storage, distribution, and management of drugs.
National Standards: Implementation of the National Essential Medicines List and clinical guidelines.
Irrational Drug Use: Identifying causes (such as patient load and lack of information) and impacts of irrational drug use on the healthcare system.

Interactive Learning and Evaluation

MTI employed state-of-the-art adult learning methodologies across all batches, including brainstorming sessions, role plays, quizzes, and group discussions. Participants engaged in group presentations to identify the causes of irrational drug use and propose pathways for improvement.

Impact evaluations conducted for every batch revealed significant improvements. Pre- and post-tests showed a marked increase in participants' understanding of drug use indicators, rational prescribing, and proper inventory control.

The training series concluded with certificate awarding ceremonies for each batch, recognizing the dedication of the 75 trainees. By equipping these frontline health workers with updated knowledge, MTI Ltd. is helping to build a safer, more efficient urban health service delivery system for Bangladesh.
