PMP Day 2: a2i Officials Map the Process Groups, Knowledge Areas and the Project Charter
The second day of the Professional Certification Program on Project Management Professional (PMP) for the Aspire to Innovate (a2i) Programme was held on 23 May 2026 at a2i, ICT Tower, Agargaon. Where Day 1 introduced the course and the exam, Day 2 laid out the machinery of project management itself: the five process groups, the ten knowledge areas they run across, and the first document every project needs — the project charter.
About the engagement: Under the assignment “Hiring a Consulting Firm for Project Implementation Support at a2i”, MTI Ltd. organises the full PMP capacity-building track for the Aspire to Innovate (a2i) Programme of the Information and Communication Technology Division, Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh. The programme follows the PMI® Authorized PMP® Exam Prep curriculum (Version 3.0) and its Exam Content Outline references.
Five Process Groups, Ten Knowledge Areas
The session was built around a single flipchart that stayed on the stand all day. On it, the trainer mapped the five process groups of a project — Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring & Controlling and Closing — and wrote beside each one how many processes it contains. The imbalance is the point: initiating a project takes two processes, planning it takes twenty-four. Most of the discipline of project management is in deciding, before work starts, how the work will be done.
A second sheet listed the ten knowledge areas that cut across those groups: integration, scope, schedule, cost, quality, resources, communications, risk, procurement and stakeholders. Read together, the two lists form the grid that the rest of the course fills in.
Starting a Project: the Project Charter
From the framework the day moved to its first concrete output. Using PMI’s process groups practice guide on screen, the trainer walked through Develop Project Charter — its inputs, the tools and techniques used to produce it, and what the finished charter must contain. For a2i’s consultants, many of whom take projects from concept note to DPP, the charter is the bridge between a government decision and a team that can act on it: it names the sponsor, the objective, the high-level scope and the authority the project manager holds.
