PMP Day 4: a2i Officials Study Team Formation, Servant Leadership and Managing Conflict
The fourth day of the Professional Certification Program on Project Management Professional (PMP) for the Aspire to Innovate (a2i) Programme was held on 20 June 2026 at a2i, ICT Tower, Agargaon. Day 4 moved from processes to people — the domain that carries the largest share of PMI’s leadership content. The cohort worked through how a project team is formed, what servant leadership and self-organising teams mean in practice, and how to use interpersonal skills to manage conflict.
About the engagement: Under the assignment “Hiring a Consulting Firm for Project Implementation Support at a2i”, MTI Ltd. organises the full PMP capacity-building track for the Aspire to Innovate (a2i) Programme of the Information and Communication Technology Division, Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh. The programme follows the PMI® Authorized PMP® Exam Prep curriculum (Version 3.0) and its Exam Content Outline references.
Forming the Team
The day opened on Project Team Formation: Key Concepts. Two ideas anchored the discussion. A self-organising team is one in which people decide among themselves how the work gets done, rather than waiting to be assigned tasks. Servant leadership is the practice of leading by understanding and addressing the needs and development of team members so that the team performs at its best. Both sit uneasily with a hierarchical public-sector culture, and that tension was the substance of the session: the cohort discussed where in a2i’s service teams these approaches already work, and where a project manager has to create the conditions for them.
Using Interpersonal Skills to Manage Conflict
The second block turned to conflict, which PMI treats as a normal part of project life rather than a failure. A slide on Using Interpersonal Skills to Manage Conflict set out five skills a project manager brings to a disagreement: emotional intelligence to understand and defuse the situation; influencing to persuade parties to change their approach or mindset; leadership to steer people in a more positive direction; decision-making to offer a solution that moves the situation forward; and active listening — listening for the message beneath the words. Participants tested each against conflicts they had seen on multi-agency government projects.
